Chat is, as the name suggests, conversation. In a chat room, you can have the greatest time just conversing with your friends, family or even interesting strangers.

Anyone who has a Sify Mail ID can use Sify Chat. If you do not have a Sify Mail ID, you will have to create one by registering here. (hyperlink to http://mail.sify.com/signup.php3). To register for Sify Chat, simply log in using your Sify Mail ID & password and choose a Nickname for yourself.

The Sify Chat nickname you choose, will be your name on Sify Chat. This ensures that your privacy and identity are protected. To ensure complete privacy, we suggest that you choose a nickname that is unusual.

To create a profile for yourself on Sify Chat, select your name in the user list and click on the 'View Profile' button. Enter your details in the fields provided on the pop-up. This will be your profile on Sify Chat. For security reasons, do not reveal your true identity, address or phone number on Sify Chat.

Chat rooms are the places where you can the actual conversation takes place. Think of it as a real room or hang out in the real world. You can choose a Chat room to suit your tastes (Cricket room) or mood (Forever young) or even a city specific room (Bombay Talkies)

On the new Sify Chat, chatting is easy and fun! Just type in your thoughts into the text field on you chat applet and click on 'Send'. Your message is displayed in the "chat Room' for the other 'chatters' to see. You can also send images instead of text.

To send images, simply view the images by clicking on the 'Images' button on your chat window and select the one you want and click on 'Send'.

On Java Chat, view the images by clicking on the 'Images' button and then choose the image you want from the drop down menu provided alongside. To send the image, click on 'Send'.

A private message, as the name suggests, is 'private', visible only to the sender and the recepient.

To send a private message, select the name of the person to whom you wish to send a private message from the Users/Buddy List by clicking on his/her name and click on the 'Send PM' button. Key in your message in the text field of the pop-up that gets thrown up and click on the 'send' button.You can also double-click the person's name in the user list to throw up the Private Message pop-up.
Alternatively, double-click on the message in the chat window. Key in your message in the text field of the pop-up that gets thrown up and click on the 'send' button.

To add a buddy, select the name of the user from the 'Users List' by clicking on his/her name and click on 'Add Buddy'. If the user accepts your invitation, his/her name will get added to your Buddy List.

To remove a buddy, select the user's name on your buddy list and click on 'remove Buddy'. Your buddy will be deleted from your buddy list.

When you trace someone, you are automatically shifted to the room where that person is, allowing you to continue your conversation in another room. To trace someone, select his/her name from the users list and click on the 'Trace' button. To stop tracing someone, simply select the user's name and click on 'Un-trace'.

If you wish to ignore someone, select his/her name from the users list and click on 'Ignore'. When you ignore someone,. you will not be able to receive or send him any messages. To stop ignoring someone, select his/her name from the users list and click on 'Un-ignore'.

Select the room you wish to join from the 'Rooms List' and click on 'Join Room'.You can also double-click the name of the room you wish to join. You will automatically be diverted to the room of your choice.

Click on the 'Rooms' button on your chat window. Next, click on the 'Create a room' button and type in the name of the room you wish to create in the text field on the pop-up.

You can search for a user by his Nick Name using the 'Search User' button at the bottom of your chat applet. Click on the 'Search User' button and key in the name of the user you are searching for into the text field provided. If you do not know the user's name, you can search for him/her using the Alphabet Bar provided.

In order to ensure the quality of the chat service, the Sify Chat server will automatically log you out in case it detects any spamming , i.e. in case you send an excessive number of messages within a few seconds. If this occurs, you will need to log back into Sify Chat in order to continue chatting.
